The Festival of the Oracle:- The annual festival of the two Rongtsan oracles takes place around the Buddhist new year, usually in the first half of March. One lamas is chosen by lots every two years. They purify themselves with months of fasting and meditation to make themselves suitable receptacles for receiving the oracles spirits. When possessed they are said to be able to perform many astounding feats such as cutting themselves with knives and walking around the ramparts of the top storey blindfolded with no fear of falling down the precipice below. While in this trance state they answer questions about the prospects for Matho and Ladakh for the coming year as well as personal questions put to them by individuals.
The Stok and Matho religious festivals will permit you to attend authentic celebrations of Ladakh's Buddhist culture.
Ladakh is known for its natural beauty, culture is the Ornaments on it.
Brief History of Tibetan Medicine
Tibetan medicine is an ancient system of medicine which brings together medical wisdom from the Tibetan plateau, Central Asia, China and the Indian Subcontinent. It has an intimate relationship with Tibetan Buddhism. The main medical text, known in Tibetan as the Gyushi, 'The Fourfold Tantra', is said to have been first taught by the medicine Buddha and written down in Sanskrit around the 4AD. It was translated into Tibetan by the famous Tibetan translator Vairocana in the 8th century. In the eleventh century the renowned Tibetan physician, Yuthog Yontan Gompo produced a revised version of the text which forms the basis of all later editions. The text is written in a terse, concise verse form and has been the subject of a great abundance of medical commentaries
Amchi:- Which is name for a qualified Tibetan medical doctor. He comes from a family lineage of Tibetan doctors.

How Ladakh got its New Year:- Losser - The New Year festival has an interesting history. In the 17th century, King Jamyang Namgyal decided to lead an expedition against the Balti forces during winter. He was advised that any expedition before the New Year would be inauspicious. Like Alexander's solution was direct and simple. He advanced the New Year celebrations by two months, establishing a tradition that people still follow celebrating Losar on the first day of the eleventh month of every year.
Blending Buddhism with Bonism:- Losar is the most elaborate of all the socio-religious events of Ladakh. It involves the entire population of the region. Interestingly, the rites and rituals are a mixture of Buddhist and the pre-Bhuddhist Bon religious practices. Preparations start by the end of the harvest period when people start stocking provisions, sheep and goats for the customary feasts as well as grain for brewing 'chang' ( a local barley beer ). New clothes and jewellery are kept ready for the occasion.
The Lossar - Festival is held every year for 10 days. Performers adorned with gold and silver ornaments and turquoise headgear throng the streets.
