Ladakh, the land of high passes, borders Tibet in the east and Pakistan in the west. It is one of the most remote and least populated regions of India. Because of little rainfall the mountains are bare, but around streams and areas with spring water grass lands appear and villages are surrounded by green fields and trees. There are snow capped mountain peaks of more than 6000 meters high, windswept plains, magnificent blue lakes and mighty rivers in canyons with steep cliffs or wide valleys.
